Merefolk

Merefolk : are persons that come from a Cornish legend. It is said that a mermaid fell in love with the singing voice of Matthew Trewhella, a chorister at Zenner church. She lured him into the depths of the sea where they married and raised several children. The story is considered to be just that, a story and nothing more than a legend.

Merefolk are said to grant three wishes to any man who manages to capture them. They sometimes marry humans producing sons who are great sailors.

Mermaids also are said to also have good qualities. They warn sailors of bad storms, and have helped kind persons in different ways.

When a human male manages to force a mermaid to join him on land and become his wife, such liasons were most likely doomed since an enchantment was required to give the mermaid human legs and the breaking of some taboo or promise would allow the mermaid to resume her natural form and escape.
